Maria Richert, a PhD student from Leadership, Organisations and Behaviour (LOB), presented a paper at the Emerging Market Institute Annual Conference on 3 November 2022.

The conference was led by the Emerging Market Institute, in collaboration with the China Institute for China Economic Research (CICER), the Cornell China Centre and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Institute. It brought together business leaders, scholars and PhD students from across the world to discuss research on the role of emerging markets and their companies in the global economy. It was hosted by Cornell University in New York City, USA, and ran on the theme of 'Reinventing Global Value Chains'.

Maria’s paper was titled Chinese Investment in Resource-Rich Countries: A Review and New Directions for Future Research. Exploring the role of Chinese outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) in resource-rich countries, the paper explores avenues for further theoretical and research development across five identified streams. These streams were the institutional pattern, economic fundamentals, factors affecting motives of investment, investment risk and social and environmental patterns.

In addition to being selected for presentation, Maria's paper also featured in a special session for mixed methods and qualitative studies to highlight the importance of exploiting different methods for examining emerging market phenomena. For her participation in this conference, Maria received a travel grant from the organiser.

Dr Irina Heim, one of Maria’s supervisors, commented:

"Thanks to Andrew Foley, Professor Lourdes Casanova and Professor Shanjun Li for organizing the conference, providing a travel grant and in-depth supportive and constructive feedback on the work presented."
