Established in 2001, KBTU focuses its research on critical sectors of the Kazakhstani economy, including oil and gas, banking and telecommunications. KBTU has a longstanding partnership with the University of Reading and several other prestigious international universities, including the University of London and Harvard Business School.

The collaboration with the University of Reading is driven by Henley Business School's Centre for Euro-Asian Studies (CEAS). The CEAS and KBTU have worked together to arrange numerous research visits, partner on British Council initiatives such as the Creative Spark project and the INTERLINKS project and create the Kazakh-British Centre for Competitiveness as a think tank to deepen and to expand the role of competitiveness in Kazakhstan's research, action and policy.

In her acceptance speech, Professor Kalyuzhnova expressed her pride in this recognition: "As someone born and educated here in Kazakhstan, it is a great privilege to return and share ideas on strengthening connections between our institutions. Today, I will be discussing the exciting partnership between Henley Business School and KBTU, focusing on how this collaboration can enhance employability, foster innovation and contribute to the development of key industries, such as natural resources and artificial intelligence."
